In the world we are living in genius needs a definition upgrade. I’ve seen no timeline on revisions to the common IQ tests.

In our experience, STAR360 is pretty accurate at indicating if students are reading at their grade level, showing exactly which reading skills students have learned and which they still need to work on, with the most important skills being letter sounds for young kids, understanding what they read for middle grades, and analyzing complex texts for older students.

This sounds incredibly frustrating, but there’s likely nothing “wrong” with you – you may be experiencing a common disconnect between ability and academic performance that has several possible explanations.
Your pattern suggests you might be dealing with test anxiety or performance anxiety. Even highly intelligent people can struggle to demonstrate their knowledge under testing conditions due to stress, time pressure, or the artificial nature of test environments. The fact that you knew the accounting material the second time around but performed better suggests this isn’t about intelligence or understanding.
Another possibility is that you’re a different type of learner than traditional classroom settings accommodate. Some people need more time to process and organize information, or they learn better through application rather than memorization and regurgitation. Your high IQ combined with poor initial performance often indicates a mismatch between how you naturally think and how you’re being asked to demonstrate knowledge.
You might also be experiencing what’s sometimes called “perfectionism paralysis” – where high-ability students second-guess themselves or overthink problems, leading to poor performance despite knowing the material.
The pattern you describe – failing initially but succeeding when retaking courses – suggests you might benefit from extended time, alternative testing formats, or simply a less pressured environment to show what you know.
Many successful people have similar academic histories but go on to excel in their careers where they can demonstrate knowledge in more natural ways.

I agree. Like you, we are still using the same phonics/reading tools from 1962, and it still works! 95% of our students go from nonreader to 1st grader reading level in 8 sessions. Imagine that:-)
